Dont's on Social Media Optimization

I do believe you have read many articles, blogs, etc. related to social media optimization and that you have understand how it works, but put in mind there are don’ts on how this process works, and I’m willing to share it with you.

Rule #1 - Don’t create fake accounts (sock puppet accounts) at places like Digg, Del.icio.us, technorati, etc., just so you can fill them with links, diggs, tags, etc., in hopes of artificially boosting your page to the top of those venues. Fake accounts have been around since the first days of email, and who among us doesn't have multiple email accounts, or multiple blogs? So don't act innocent. If you have a bunch of accounts you create solely for the purpose of creating a false sense of buzz for your own site or your client's, then stop it.

Rule #2 - Limit your ego-diggs. If you ask a friend or two to digg your latest article/blog post, that's fine, but if you are digg-pandering to hundreds of your "closest pals" then stop kidding yourself. That's just another form of stuffing the ballot box, and you know it.

Rule #3 - Don’t get to excited and begin to post content. Take your time, familiarize you self with the site and its community, leave comments to items you find interesting, and add those who post interesting contents.

Rule #4 - Don’t be too self centered, if your only reason being there is to promote your self, you wont be successful.

Rule #5 - Don’t be greedy on your votes and comments, if you see it interesting then give a vote up and leave comments if you have something interesting to say.

Rule #6 - Don’t just vote on items that are submitted by your mutual friends. Look around you might see items that could catch your interest and that’s the time you cast your vote or leave a comment. Only voting on friends stuff is a pattern that can easily be detected.

Link well my friend,
